The Solution-Driven Critical Thinker
Kanani steps forward not just as an experienced legislator, but as a solution-driven critical thinker deeply rooted in the Kapolei and Makakilo community she’s called home for decades. With a formidable background as an attorney, educator, and former deputy city prosecutor, she brings an analytical and collaborative mindset to the Legislature—which she combines with a personal understanding of her district’s evolving priorities. Since taking office, Representative Souza has taken concrete, pragmatic steps to address urgent issues like infrastructure and public safety.
One of Kanani's first moves was introducing legislation to move the stalled Makakilo Drive Extension into state jurisdiction, ensuring progress on a vital traffic safety and access project. Alongside these efforts, she co-created the bipartisan Crime Prevention and Justice Caucus and championed targeted reforms to combat the surge in property crimes—like the “smash and grab” incidents impacting local businesses.

Beyond concrete legislation, Souza’s leadership is defined by independent, community-centered thinking. Though she serves as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic Legislature, she has deliberately positioned herself as an “independent voice,” evaluating each issue on merit rather than adhering strictly to party ideology. Her approach to policymaking is grounded in collaboration across the aisle, mindful analysis, and unwavering dedication to transparency.
